At Baylor, he was named to the GTE Southwest Conference All Academic Athletic team while lettering in track in 10,000 meters. John also received the Legal Professionalism Award from Baylor Law School in 1991. He ran a 2:46 marathon a year after graduating from law school, then progressively ran slower times he will not divulge.

He has been named to Texas Super Lawyers for eight years in a row (2010 through 2018), and was nominated and inducted into the Texas Bar Foundation in 2006.

John has tried three cases alleging brain injury to verdict and handled dozens of other TBI cases in Texas and a few in other states. He has also tried commercial and property cases to jury verdicts seeking 7 and 8 figure damages, which were not awarded. In recent years he has tried fiduciary cases to juries for defendants and a plaintiff, to defense verdicts when defending and to a 7 figure settlement on the plaintiff side.

He divides his time between severe injury cases, trucking and transportation cases, fiduciary litigation, real estate and construction disputes, insurance coverage claims and contractual indemnity claims.

John has enjoyed picking juries from panels as large as 100 members for two days, in counties all over Texas. He has also handled complex injury and coverage cases outside the state of Texas.

After turning off both of his iPhones, John enjoys spending time with his two sons, running, quail hunting and backpacking, especially in Big Bend National Park.

Alternatives to Litigation: Mediation and Creative Settlements
Property claims often involve multiple parties, emotive issues and significant brinkmanship all of which lead to protracted litigation, significant cost, and delay in resolution. While the numerous types of disputes involved in property losses require the ability to be flexible, very often, they have common themes and would benefit greatly from the narrowing of issues, at the earliest possible stage, which traditional litigation rarely promotes. Creativity and ADR can significantly help in the process.
